Burchfield Park

The mission of The Charles Burchfield Gardenville District is to encourage visitors to the Town of West Seneca through promotion of its many artistic, cultural, environmental and historic assets, with a focus on the works and legacy of American painter Charles E. Burchfield, the Seneca Indians and the Ebenezers.

Overview:

The Charles Burchfield Gardenville District is a collection of historic, artistic, religious, educational and family oriented places to explore in West Seneca’s Gardenville District. In addition to being the home and inspiration of artist Charles E. Burchfield, the Gardenville District pays homage to early settlers including the Seneca Indians and the Ebenezers, a German-speaking religious sect that purchased and occupied 5,000 acres along Buffalo Creek in the 1840s.

This walkable tourism destination is home to at least nine significant landmarks: Charles Burchfield Home, Charles Burchfield Studio, Burchfield Nature & Art Center, Burchfield Park, Christian Metz House, Fourteen Holy Helpers Church, St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church Cemetery and Ebenezer Cemetery.

Burchfield Nature & Art Center, Burchfield Park, Ebenezer Cemetery:

A unique combination of art, nature and history awaits visitors to the Charles E. Burchfield Nature & Art Center. Its 19 scenic acres are an easy walk with benches and picnic tables along the way. Children enjoy the first-class playground, stump garden and chances to explore the creek. It is dog friendly (on leash). The outdoor amphitheater, gazebo and pergola are picturesque spots where events are often held.

Throughout the park, plaques showing examples of the paintings of Charles E. Burchfield can be found. Burchfield’s home for most of his adult life can be seen from the gazebo. Several sculptures by various artists can also be found.

The rich history of the area is also highlighted. Originally part of the Buffalo Creek Reservation, members of the Seneca Indians made this area their home into the 1840s. Additionally, a group of German immigrants who became known as Ebenezers, a communal society with distinct religious beliefs, settled in the area in the 1840s. One of their cemeteries can be found in the park, along with a plaque with the names of those buried there.

The Center consists of an art gallery, exhibition area, classrooms, offices and more! For more information, please visit http://www.burchfieldnac.org.
